We all know what the word 'phobia' means – certain almost supernatural fears that prevent a person from getting involved in certain actions or activities. Some may be even aware of the fact that 'phobia' is Greek for fear – quite logical connection, wouldn't you agree? So mind that if you experience unexplainable fear of something, you suffer from a serious case of phobia...
Phobia is an anxiety disorder which is closely connected with panic attacks. Phobias may chase down people of all ages and sexes. Statistic data informs that around eight per cent of USA residents suffer from a great deal of phobias.
Phobia and fear are different notions. Why? Because fear is something that is almost trivial and normal if compared with phobias. Fear is a sign of phobia – notion which is much more serious and dangerous than mere fear.
There are many types of phobias, most of them have their specific names (tersm). Examples are xenophobia which is fear of strangers or homophobia which is fear or disrespect and intolerance towards homosexual; claustrophobia is extreme, unusual fear of closed space; its antipode is agoraphobia – fear of open space. There is even such phenomenon as genophobia – fear of sex... Actually, these examples can be supplied endlessly because there are so many phobias that it's kinda fearful to mention the full list...
